Cone of Cogency

This exercise was to help us narrow our dissertations down into the one specific point, making it easier for the reader to understand and follow.

  1. Hey Joe - I think your case study isn't specific enough - it's logically got to be examining a game using the criteria of 'ART' to test/challenge/argue that it can indeed be considered 'ART' - this probably means finding a computer game or games that is more 'avant-garde' and 'about it's own category' than simply making the argument for Grand Theft Auto - as I've suggested a few times now, the case-studies will no doubt come when you start researching 'fine art and computer games' to identify a practitioner that is using games or thinking about games from a fine art perspective. Remember the cone is asking you to get more focused and more specific, not less, and this structure leaps back to the broad category of 'relativism' in the final chapter.

My suggestion would be that Chapter 1 actually ends with Modernism and 'Art for Art's sake' and the ideas of Clement Greenberg (please start reading his stuff, Joe!) - so at the conclusion of Chapter 1 you've established a criteria or formula for 'what art can be'. Then, Chapter 2 introduces the postmodern ideas challenging the authority of Modernism and you get into the discussion that will help you argue that the debate about Art and where Art can happen is more complex. I think this is also where you need to identify the antecedents of video game art - so sound art, video art and installation art.

    1. Hi Phil,

Thanks for the feedback! I've tried searching for various fine art projects using video games or video game engines, and have been able to find a couple of people - Feng Mengbo, who alters and hacks games to transform them into political commentary, and Steph Thirion, who creates interactive art pieces as well as video games.
